itÆs been a couple of years since victim last released a full 12, but just like the buses you wait that long and then two come along at once. for victim, the >off piste< 12 follows hot on the heels of their split 12 with jerome hill & dont recordings. in the case of ben pest, they are coming thick and fast at the moment, with a recent release on lukes angers bonus round label, and an upcoming 12 on the seriously deranged panic bridge label. so, all in all a busy few months. as for the tracks, they all share in common a seriously weighty bottom end, and a tendency for crunchy acidic midsàbut that is kinda where the similarities end, as ben takes the opportunity to explore various avenues off the main street of techno. from the stomping acid workout of >zeedonk< to the more electro-influenced beats of >pain n gain< this is a record that covers a fair few bases (basses?), although all with the aim of thrilling a crowd that enjoys their techno on the gnarly side.

the debut release from steve summers. three amazing raw and unpolished chicago tracks. shake the house is a magic track that has been recorded on an old analogue tape recorder (hence the noise). stereotype acid that sounds like a early 808 state jam or a guy called gerald. messages from the past and waves are genuine old chicago house tracks. two tracks that are essential for everyone enjoying old joe lewis and fingers inc releases. crazy low-fi tracks that are just a lot of fun! we couldnt stop playing this in the office... cant wait to play it from nice shiny black wax!

after the very well recieved >hells bells< & >headbangin< 12 inches, which got revievewed as record of the month in raveline magazine, its time for a new 12 inch by miss djax. >gunslinger< is a true hardtechno stomper with a very classic whistle from everybodies favorite western movie. on the b side we find a rave influenced techno track containing classic acid noises and spiced up by the vocals of dj rush. another brilliant peaktime record that will for sure burn the dancefloor. already supported by dj rush, bold and frank kvitta and more.

abusing our soft side for dub edgar 9000 gave us these compelling tracks.>play me minus three (patience vs. epiphany mix)< û what starts like a nicely arranged minimal tune bubbles and billows after a short pause up to a big ride on the acid-dub-ghost-train. at the latest when the decently deployed and gated french horn pad sets in on the second half you are completely lost. not for quick peep û but beware: danger of addiction of endless playing is definitely given.meanwhile the title >hook & bait< of the b-side rather reads like the basic principle of fishing. it really sounds like the classic principle of ambient à well almost, since in this case this ambient track is drifting along itself, underlined with a straight driving and floating rhythm fed by an earthly bassline.petri heil! (as we say in krauts-country)

some would say the chicken lips label is long overdue, but lipservice is worth the wait as it promises the very best from augmented cl clan of dean meredith, andy meecham, stevie kotey and johnny spencer - a collective who have remixed just about everyone, spawned a thousand copycats and destroyed a few floors in the process. the inaugural lipservice release sees the chaps unleash zeefungk, one of their most popular and rare guises. the a-side is occupied by >robot eyes< - a splendid slice of electro-disco-funk which is vintage chicken lips. acid bass and loose drums combine with keys which progress wonderfully to create a really special piece of dancefloor tomfoolery. next up is >feast of freeks< (stevie koteys tape edit), a new edit of a track featured on the bands now-classic >extended play< album but never released as a 12inch. the bearfunk main man and all round gent delivers a tweaky, driving uptempo disco monster which climaxes in some trademark kotey madness. >robot lips< closes the packages and displays more of the guys unreal keyboard work as the groove stays steady but the hands go hyper. riddled with vintage synth work, >robot lips< is heads down business and no mistake.

selected advent deal. - this debut release on new imprint numbercult is sure to make waves, pulling no punches with this weighty production. the series hits off with a anonymous artist (which most likely is not making his debut here, judging on the production skills). the a side kicks off landlines, 11 minutes of driving deepness, an overdriven stabbing subbass and solid percussion give the track monstrous bottom end with the hypnotic lead line almost vanishing in the vastness. this could be descriped as a kind of mid 90s techno... the rawer side of basic channel or fcom. an absolute sexy monster track that keeps pushing forward and remains its funky almost dubby drive. strong! from the b side clonic is a driving mills esque x 103 ish assault, layering discordant acid lines to produce an intense and relentless track, broken only once with soaring beautiful strings. a side is essential! the b side only for the headstrong. a great start for this new label from glasgow releasing limited releases of high calibre deep techno from a dynamic collective of producers. a label grounded on the basics of techno with an open mind to the future. and what a great start. check!!!

bongard problems is classic cornish influenced breakbeat techno with squidgy roland bass and 8 bit dirt percussion. motion studies is a swingy non linear acid disco trip with moody chord backdrops and some unexpected twists and turns along the way. pixel wrap is medieval echo techno with inhuman voices that give way to a late 80s rave breakdown that builds up into something else again. excalibur is a camelot techno galloper, complete with arthurian lyrics. blank expanse is the kind of music depeche mode ought to be making if they hadnt turned into u2.

the second instalment of the aprÚs vinyl series sees australian producer touch sensitive (also a member of van she) kicking things off with >body stop<, an italo disco stomper thats been at home in the fc catalogue for quite some time. recently unearthed by london based producer toby tobias in a chart of >hidden gems< it seemed only natural to ask toby to remix body stop and the result sees toby putting more space in the track, pushing it further onto the dancefloor and keeping it playful all at once. on the flip we take the uk connection a little further with leeds based producer bonar bradberry floating into cosmic territory with >fought & won< whilst toby tobias turns in some glorious tour-bus-disco on >azul blue<, guitars and acid lines sitting comfortably side by side for the ride.

after a longer gap than intended, part two of the cage & aviary remix series lands with a bang. truck are an enigma of a band, only forming when the astral alignments deem it appropriate - the next is due in 2012. cage & aviary take the brilliant vocal into proto/acid house territory with a killer bassline ready to move any dancefloor. crude vocal cut ups add to the 80s remix feel, while guitar licks, god pads, and all manner of prophet warblings come and go in a patchwork of angled sounds. sinister strings cut through at the mid way point before the superb outro vocal takes you home. for the dub, ape into jam & leo zero put their heads together and push the track into more of a dancefloor place, employing arpeggiators to keep the cut and paste elements rolling along. leo is a man of many excellent edits, productions, and remixes - watch out for an exciting new vocal project coming from him soon
